What to see & do with your IDP in Lebanon?
Lebanon’s compact size makes it ideal for road trips, and having an international driving permit opens the door to flexible, spontaneous travel. Whether you’re in search of historic landmarks or scenic escapes, a rental car and IDP let you chart your own route at your own pace.
1. Beirut to Byblos
Head north from Beirut to the ancient port city of Byblos. This 40 km stretch hugs the Mediterranean coast, offering ocean views and roadside cafés. Once in Byblos, wander through souks, visit the Crusader Castle, and explore millennia-old ruins.
2. Mountain roads to Deir el Qamar
Drive southeast into the Chouf region, where winding roads pass through cedar groves and terraced hillsides. Deir el Qamar, a well-preserved Ottoman village, makes a great stop for local history and mountain air. Be prepared for occasional road checks along the way.
3. Wine tasting in the Bekaa Valley
With an IDP, you can easily rent a vehicle to explore the wine region around Zahle. The valley is home to vineyards like Chateau Ksara and Chateau Kefraya. The roads are mostly well-paved but expect rural detours, especially in harvest season.
4. Coastal journey to Tyre
Travel south to Tyre, a relaxed beach town with Roman ruins and a laid-back atmosphere. The drive from Beirut takes around two hours. Bring your IDP in case of spot checks near security zones along the southern route.
5. Northern adventure to Qadisha Valley
Make your way to the mountainous north and visit Bsharri, gateway to the Qadisha Valley. This UNESCO-listed gorge is dotted with rock-cut monasteries and offers striking alpine views. Be cautious — some roads are narrow and winding, especially in winter months.
Each region offers a different glimpse into Lebanon’s rich landscape. With an international driving permit, you can rent with confidence and enjoy the freedom of going off the beaten path.
