What to see & do with your IDP in Burkina Faso?
With your international driving permit, Burkina Faso becomes a rewarding country to explore by road. A mix of natural wonders, cultural sites, and rural landscapes await travelers willing to take the wheel.
Ouagadougou to Bobo-Dioulasso
Start your journey in the capital, Ouagadougou, and drive southwest to Bobo-Dioulasso. This 5–6 hour route introduces you to the open plains and roadside villages of the central plateau. In Bobo, you’ll find the city’s iconic Grand Mosque, colonial-era architecture, and a thriving local music culture.
Sindou Peaks and Beyond
From Bobo, continue west toward the Sindou Peaks. These narrow rock formations rise dramatically from the earth, creating a landscape unlike anywhere else in the region. The drive passes through small farming communities, offering a glimpse into local life. The Sindou area is also great for light hiking and cultural immersion.
Banfora and Surroundings
Just an hour from Sindou, Banfora is a gateway to several natural attractions. With your IDP, you can rent a car and easily visit Lake Tengrela, where hippos are often seen, or drive to the nearby Karfiguéla Waterfalls. The area is well connected by local roads, making it ideal for self-guided tours.
Eastern Safari Routes
Heading east, Arli and W National Parks provide excellent options for wildlife viewing. These protected zones feature elephants, antelope, and birdlife, and can be explored by guided tour or self-drive safaris. Road access is improving, but be ready for rough patches—especially in the rainy season.
Cultural Routes to Tiebele
South of the capital, Tiebele and nearby villages are famous for their painted mud homes and traditional architecture. These artistic communities are best reached by car, as public transport options are limited. The roads are mostly unpaved, but manageable with a rental vehicle.
Each of these destinations showcases a different side of Burkina Faso—and having an international driving permit allows you to explore them on your own schedule, with flexibility and confidence.
